Working in retirement

You've retired, or almost. The first few months feel good. Then the days get longer, and you catch yourself rebuilding the neighbour's porch just for the pleasure of doing things right. Your hands still want to work.

If you're looking for a job for retirees that means something, hands-on and during the day, here's an honest look: what your experience is worth, what the work really takes, and what changes for your pension when you go back to work in Québec.

Your experience is exactly what clients are looking for

A client who opens the door isn't just looking for a pair of arms: they want someone they can trust in their home. That's where years of projects and plain common sense make the difference:

  • attention to detail: you know a crooked shelf stays crooked for ten years;
  • know-how: you've seen the problem before, often more than once, and you know where to start;
  • trust: you take the time to explain, you clean up after yourself, you do what you said you'd do.

These qualities aren't learned in a week. If you have them, they're worth something.

Let's be frank: this is a real full-time job

Many people looking for a semi-retirement job picture two or three days a week. This isn't that job, and we'd rather say so right away.

The handyman position at Beau-frère à louer means 35 paid hours a week, guaranteed from day one, daytime, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. You don't pick your hours à la carte: your schedule is prepared by our call centre, and our members count on you.

In return: no evenings, no weekends, a paycheque every week, and hours that don't disappear when things are quiet.

What it takes, honestly

We don't talk about age. We talk about what you can do, today. You're the right person if:

  • you're fit for light to moderate physical work: climbing a stepladder, carrying your toolbox, kneeling to install a baseboard;
  • you have a valid driver's licence and you're comfortable driving from one client to the next;
  • you like people and you care about the client being happy;
  • you like a clear framework and well-defined rules;
  • you're good with your hands and you can prove it: a redone bathroom, a floor you installed, a finished basement.

On safety: know your limits and respect them. You do no electrical and no plumbing work; that's not our trade, and a trainer is by your side from the start.

Your pension and your pay: what changes in Québec

The first question: will working in retirement cut my pension? Here's what the official sources say. Every situation is different: check yours with Retraite Québec, Service Canada or an advisor before you decide.

Your Québec Pension Plan retirement pension

According to Retraite Québec, if you work while receiving your QPP pension, it does not decrease. You keep contributing on your pay, and those contributions entitle you to a retirement pension supplement: 0.66% of the earnings you contributed on the previous year, paid automatically starting the following year, for the rest of your life, and indexed to the cost of living.

Stopping contributions: a choice, not an obligation

If you're 65 or older and already receiving your retirement pension, you can choose to stop contributing to the QPP. The form goes to your employer and to Revenu Québec. Your take-home pay goes up a little, but no supplement is added to your pension. You can reverse your decision whenever you want.

The Old Age Security pension

Federally, your Old Age Security pension doesn't change because you work, unless your net world income goes over a threshold: $95,323 for 2026 income. Above that, you repay 15% of the amount over the threshold. The Guaranteed Income Supplement, on the other hand, is reserved for lower incomes: if you receive it, look into it before accepting a job, because a salary can reduce it.

A tax credit worth knowing about

Revenu Québec offers the tax credit for career extension. For 2025, it applied to Québec residents aged 65 or older with eligible work income over $7,500, up to a maximum of $1,750, reduced based on net income. Check the conditions for the current year. Québec's Ministère des Finances also offers a calculator for work income kept in retirement.

What Beau-frère à louer offers, in black and white

  • 35 paid hours every week, even in quieter weeks: those hours then go to training, shadowing a colleague, van maintenance or inspections of our members' homes;

  • $400 a year for your tools, work clothes provided;
  • a $500 bonus after your first 3 months, group insurance 50% paid after 3 months and the holiday week paid;
